This is a great place to see Bald Eagle activity! Granted, it is one of the most popular viewing sites in probably all of the United States for eagles, so be prepared for larger crowds of photographers, especially on days when they release trout into the river. On a good weather day, it is not uncommon to see over 200 photographers here, with lenses from simple 200mm to top of the line professional $30,000+ lense setups. The park is laid out nicely along the water's edge, so there is usually always a place to set up your tripod and gear, but if you want to actually set up on the concrete fisherman's wharf, come early. Like 8am if possible. Most eagle activity is centered on the opposite side of the river, so you will need a good lens to really bring them in close - at least a 600mm lens. However, you do occasionally see eagles flying directly overhead and landing in trees above you, so still bring whatever camera you have and you might get lucky with a good shot. Port-a-potties are on site, and picnic tables are available, so bringing lunches is welcomed and recommended.
I was visiting the area from out of state, and was told the Conowingo Dam was a great location for photographing birds.
I arrived pretty late in the afternoon, and set up about 200 yards from the Fisherman's Park.
It seemed like the fishermen were having a great time, although I didn't see any catches.
I did manage to photograph a couple of magnificent bald eagles, one of my bucket list birds.
I would highly recommend going to the dam, for bird photography.
Awesome place. You can see the spillover from the dam which changes based on rain amounts. Sometimes it's just a bit and sometimes a raging white water spectacular. You can fish here. You can see Bald eagles, Osprey, vultures and a bunch of other birds.
We love this place and we visit there at least a couple times a year over the last 10 years. We can always spot a few bald eagles and other wild birds. There are always lots of cameras enthusiasts with super zoom lenses keeping eyes on the eagles. It's nice just to park the car, take a few steps and watch the birds. There's a trail along the water for those who want to get some exercise too.
Are you looking to find bald eagles? This is the spot! If you don't catch any in your sight there's a few photographers that have proof that they are there. Just watch it for the vultures, they like to eat tires.
Love this area. I personally didn't see many eagles but I didn't give myself enough time today! There were a lot more birds when I came in October. I noticed that the dam was holding back the water and perhaps resulted in lack of active eagle hunting fish!
Beware of the black vultures, but still a nice place to visit since most seemed to stick to the one side of the park. Lots of fishing going on, and they have some places to have a picnic
We checked this place out on our way home from vacation driving through Maryland. Really nice place for fishing. This lady was reeling in some BIG, THICK catfish. Also this place is known for seeing bald eagles. So it's a great spot for photography lovers!
